Over a year ago we bought Tuttle Learning Chinese Characters, Vol. 1: A Revolutionary New Way to Learn and Remember the 800 Most Basic Chinese Characters. Out of 74 reviews on Amazon, this new method of learning the most common Chinese characters received (as of 9/15/2012) a whopping 4.5 stars out of five, so it reviews very well. Many of Chinese learning methods would love to have the rating Tuttle Chinese enjoys.

Here’s what we thought of it:

The idea of using stories to learn and remember characters is great, but once we dug in and started using the stories to learn the characters, it was difficult to remember anything but the story. The stories are often complex and seems to ramble on in such an unrelated direction that we wonder how the revolutionary connection happens.

But, with that said: we carry the the Tuttle Chinese book around everywhere. Why? It’s a great reference, and guide on how to write the most common Chinese characters. And it conjugates many of the characters with others learned along the way, so you’ll learn common Chinese phrases as well. Our Tuttle Chinese book is tattered just from going through and practicing the characters, the only way they can be learned: repetition, ad nauseum .
